Say, you had to choose only one of the following 2 options:
(A) You are together a lot with a group of people,
therefore you are not able to be very independent,
and as a result you don't personally know yourself that well(outside of your ingroup's opinions of you).
OR
(B) You are seldom together with a group of people,
therefore you are very independent,
and as a result you know yourself very well(and you know few people and their opinions out you that could enhance your understanding of yourself).
It's my opinion, that if we asked 1,000 people that question, at least 900 out of the 1,000 would be drawn to option (A) for 5 reasons:
(1) They're drawn to community,
(2) There's strength in numbers,
(3) There's safety in numbers,
(4) There's identity in the group, &
(5) THEY BELIEVE THEY CAN establish significant enough independence and come to know themselves quite well, despite there being this unsaid discouragement/restriction on individualism and knowing yourself.
POSSIBLE CONCLUSION:
The drive of being together with someone or a group is stronger than the drive of being an individual..
